Winter road conditions in New Zealand are generally very good, due to the fact that the snow level rarely falls to our main highways. However conditions can be frosty or icy in shaded areas, and some passes will required chains, or even be closed, in bad weather. It’s essential that you are well prepared for winter driving, and that you know the road conditions and any weather warnings before leaving home.

We’re pleased to offer road snowfall warnings this season, in association with MetService/NZ Govt as well as road hazards and closures as supplied by Transit NZ. Check them before you go, it might save a lot of hassle later.

General Road Warnings

North Island

  • Strong Wind Warning-area/s Affected: Wellington, Wairarapa Forecast: Northwest Gales May Gust 120km/h At Times Until About 6pm Today.

South Island

  • Fiordland, North Of Doubtful Sound Forecast: Rain Is Expected To Become Heavy Tonight. In The 12 To 15 Hours From 9pm Sunday, Expect 70 To 100mm. Maximum Rainfall Intensities Of 15 To 20 Mm/hr. Ranges Of Westland South Of Otira Forecast: Rain Is Expected To Become Heavy Overnight. In The 12 To 15 Hours From Midnight Sunday, Expect 80 To 120mm. Heaviest Rain Overnight Sunday And Early Monday With Intensities Of 20 To 25 Mm/hr.
